A former art educator, Nate Heck has always been concerned with the yearly decrease in arts funding. In 2013, Nate set out to create online arts content that could be seen by students around the globe, regardless of their educational institution’s financial status.

With the show now growing beyond the arts, Nate set out to prove creativity and innovation are happening in nearly every profession.

Nate Heck is now a 13x Emmy award-winning show host, I have had the pleasure working with Nate on a few of his episodes.

Processing Trauma through the Arts

How do you process trauma in your life?

Poet Januarie York found poetry at age 14 while dealing with the loss of her stepbrother to gun violence. She had no idea that years later she would be teaching others how to use poetry for healing.

York is now a full-time spoken word poet, writer, and community leader. Her poetry captures a level of passion, honesty, and humility that grabs your attention and makes you think.

If you are looking for some powerful Black History Month resources, then this episode is for you! Link to Januarie’s book!

Influential African American Portrait Painter

Do you have to be a starving artist to be successful? Absolutely not!

Jay Parnell not only works at UPS, but he is also a narrative painter. Parnell started out as a portrait photographer and then took those skills and taught himself how to paint. Parnell is now one of the most successful painters in the Midwest, and his work is sought after by collectors across the country. How do you take the world we are now living in with movements such as Black Lives Matter or the political divisions across this country? Parnell may not be a writer, but he is telling his story and making a difference through each piece he creates.

We will continue to create Black Lives Matter educational resources throughout the year.
